The EU energy label: a practical guide for B2B buyers

A–G scale, EPREL and dealer obligations, explained for resellers.

The EU energy label is mandatory for many household appliances and for TVs, and it is governed by Regulation (EU) 2017/1369. For anyone who resells appliances, in stores, online or in flyer promotions, it determines what must be shown to customers.

The A–G scale since 2021

The old classes from A+++ to D are being replaced by a simpler scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The rescaled labels have applied since 1 March 2021 to refrigerators and freezers, dishwashers, washing machines and washer-dryers, and electronic displays including TVs, and since 1 September 2021 to light sources.

Tumble dryers since 1 July 2025

Under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2534, tumble dryers have carried the new A–G label since 1 July 2025. Not all product groups have been rescaled yet: some appliances still carry the label of the previous system until their rules are revised. Always check the label supplied with each model.

EPREL and the QR code

Before placing a model on the EU market, the supplier must register it in EPREL, the European database for energy labelling. The QR code on the rescaled labels leads to the model's entry in EPREL, where the product information sheet is also available.

What dealers must show

  • The label, displayed visibly in stores and in online sales.
  • The product information sheet, available to customers.
  • In visual advertisements and promotional material for a specific model, including flyers, the energy class and the range of classes on the label.

  • EPREL registration of each model
  • Label images and data ready for online product pages
  • Energy class and range of classes for flyers and other promotional material

Frequently asked questions

Does the A–G label apply to all appliances?

Not yet. It applies to the product groups whose rules have been revised, such as refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, TVs and, since July 2025, tumble dryers. Other groups still use the previous label until their rules are updated.

Must a supermarket flyer show the energy class?

Yes, when the flyer promotes a specific model covered by the energy label: visual advertisements must show the energy class and the range of classes available on the label.

Where can I find the label and the product information sheet?

The supplier provides them with the product, and they are also available in the EPREL database, which you can reach by scanning the QR code on the label.
